Richard and Clara's Head stones. The third headstone in the background is their Daughter Hanna Fulkerson.  (it's weird to see a headstone with my name on it)
Richard Fulkerson Was born August 9, 1765.  He died March 15, 1847 in Greene county Ohio.
Clarinda (Cary, Clara) Moore
was born in 1770 in Virginia.  She died January 28, 1856 in Greene county Ohio.

Richard and Clara were married January 22, 1801 in Rockingham county Virginia.
Clara's actual given name is a bit uncertin.  she's listed in the 1850 census as Clara.  However her tombstone reads Cary.

Richard was a cooper and farmer.  a cooper is a barrel maker.  very important during that time period as most goods were stored and transported in wooden barrels.  One mention we have of Richard is a court document in 1801 where his brother Benjamin was trying to recover monies owed to him by his brother-in-law.  Benjamin and Richard married sisters.

It reads.... "Benj. Fulkerson of Shenandoah vs. Andrew Moore of Shenandoah -- O.S. 27; N. S. O--Richard Fulkerson, brother of Benjamin, married Andrew's sister, and Benj. debauched another sister."

Richard was on the list for the Virginia milita company 3, 13th regiment in 1802 and also witnessed the freeing of a slave by his owner in 1800 which is the earliest documentation we have.  We do know that Richard was born in New Jersey as every one of his surviving children in 1880 (except one) gave that as his birth place.  the only difference was his son Amos who said Richard was born in Virginia.  That leads me to believe he and his brother Benjamin moved with their family to Virginia when they were very young and grew up there.  Also there is a Richard Fulkerson listed on the roster as being part of the Battle of Kings Mountain.  There is no known Richard Fulkerson during that time that belonged to the North Carolina or Virgina Milita's.  There is, however a Rodham Fulkerson listed as being in the Virginia Militia during the revolutionary war but it is  not known if it's a poor spelling interpritation of Richard or not or what militia company he was in.  There is No Rodham Fulkerson anywhere that can be found in the Fulkerson History.  Richard would've been 15 years old at the time of the battle.  Since Capt James and Abraham Fulkerson both fought as well as John Fulkerson at the battle it's very likely a 15 year old brother, nephew, cousin etc... could've served as well.
The Richard Fulkerson on the Kings Mountain Roster has often mistakenly been atributed to Abrahams son Richard Fulkerson who was a Captian in the Virginia Militia from Washington county.  However this Richard was born in 1780 and didn't become part of the militia until around the turn of the century.
