Delilah met Preston Shields when he would travel to Richards Cooper shop and purchase barrels so he could transport produce.  Romance blossomed and the two were soon married.   In September 1848 the family moved to Richland Indiana in Jay county on a 400 acre tract of land to begin farming.  Of their children, David died at a young age of 18 yrs while baby Joseph died as a toddler being only 2 and a half years old.  Richard is mentioned in his brothers biography as single and living down south.  there is no census or military records of Richard that I can find other than the 1850 census when he was 7.   Hannah is reported by her brother Johns History as having died shortly after her marriage to Cyrus Bergdoll.  Benjamin Frandlin Shields Was visiting family in Tipton County Indiana (probably Delilah's nephew Hiram Fulkerson) when he enlisted in the 19th Indiana Regiment in September 1861 and died less than a month later in Washington fighting for the Union.  He was the first Volenteer from Jay County to have died in the war.
The Shields family has done much extensive work tracing their roots.  for more information about Delilah's children and grandchildren click
